Owl electricity monitors are being introduced on a library loan basis to encourage awareness of energy consumption in the Bracknell Forest Borough.

Great Hollands library is launching the monitors as part of the Small Change Big Difference climate change week which begins on Wednesday 15th July. The campaign, introduced by the Local Government Association, encourages councils to help local residents combat climate change.

The Owl Monitors, which currently cost around £30 from online stores, wirelessly transmit information on household energy use to a mobile display unit. The monitors are being loaned to members of Great Hollands library on a free, library book style 3 week loan.  The aim is to show residents how much energy they are using, from continuing appliances such as fridges, to one-off high energy sources such as kettles. It is hoped that once residents are aware of how much energy they use they will find green ways to reduce consumption.

Cllr Mrs Dorothy Hayes, executive member for the environment, said: “If everyone in Bracknell Forest made a small change to their electricity use, it would make a big difference to the total amount of energy used here. The Owls are free to borrow, so please try one out and see how much electricity you could save.”

Owl monitors will become available for local residents to buy in the Autumn.
