Famous author to talk about the story of a book

May 30, 2009

Author Fay Sampson, who has written books for both adults and children, will be speaking at Whitegrove library in Warfield on Wednesday, June 17.

The author is best known for her Tintagel novels and as a winner of the Barco de Vapor Award. Her latest novel In the Blood was inspired by her interest in local and family history.

When making appearances, she often talks about the story of a book – from the first idea, through to the printed volume.

She also speaks about what happens during her research, how good and evil are represented in fantasy novels, and how she has become fascinated by the Celts and how Celtic Christianity developed in Britain after the Romans left.

Fay Sampson’s visit is part of a number of author visits taking place across Bracknell Forest’s nine libraries. Coming soon is crime writer Carol Smith who will be visiting Ascot Heath library on Friday, July 3; and Gillian Cross, the author of the Demon Headmaster and The Lost series, who will be visiting Crowthorne and Ascot Heath libraries on Wednesday, July 29.

Cllr Iain McCracken, executive member for culture, said: “Fay Sampson is the latest in a long line of well known authors who will be appearing in our Bracknell Forest libraries.

”As users will know, our libraries are not just about lending books. There is also internet use, bounce and rhyme sessions for toddlers, and the chance to research family history using national databases – and it’s all free.”

Tickets for Fay Sampson’s visit cost £2, which includes refreshments. They are available from Whitegrove library or by calling 01344 424211.

Berkshire public school closed with swine flu scare

May 29, 2009

Berkshire’s Eton College, where princes William and Harry have been students, said on its website that a 13-year-old boy had been diagnosed with swine flu virus.

The school said the boy had a mild illness and was recovering at home. It said it had taken the decision to keep the school shut until June 7 after taking advice from the government’s Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The fee-paying school is currently shut for half-term holidays.

The school said the HPA was following up pupils who had been in contact with the boy who had contracted the virus.

News of the closure of the elite college came as health officials announced a further 17 people in Britain had tested positive for the illness, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 203.

Bracknell based Marketing Consultancy Announces Launch Date of Cut-Price E-Marketing Workshop

May 29, 2009

Bracknell marketing, web-design & SEO consultancy Direct-to-Market has announced the launch date of its cut-price e-commerce marketing workshop, designed to help local businesses beat the recession by using the internet to new acquire customers.

The delegates, all owners of small and medium-sized businesses, will learn how to use the internet to generate new customers and in so doing both increase their sales revenue and cut their advertising costs.

The workshops will be presented by Andrew Pearce, an experienced marketing consultant and owner of Direct-to-Market. He explained the reason for the workshops: “In the current economic climate many small businesses are struggling with sales and need to generate more revenue, but they are also faced with the problem of not having enough money to advertise.

“By teaching the owners of these businesses how to use the internet themselves to generate more customers we aim to help them to both increase their sales and simultaneously reduce their advertising costs.

“As local people ourselves we live and work in this area, are active in the local community, and want to see it thriving despite the recession. This is our way of giving something back to the community that has helped us to succeed.”

Pearce concluded: “The workshops are content-packed as anybody can see from the testimonials on our website. There is no attempt made to sell anything; this is pure education. The small charge is purely to cover the room hire and advertising costs, nothing more.”

The inaugural public e-Commerce Marketing Workshop will run in Bracknell, Berkshire on Tuesday 9th June, with a price of just £17 per seat but:

Andrew Mackay latest: President Obama’s former brother-in-law to stand as candidate

May 28, 2009

The London Evening Standard writes that Barack Obama’s brother-in-law is to challenge for the Conservative seat left vacant by disgraced MP Andrew MacKay in Bracknell.

Mr Manners, aged 56 years, a successful businessman and close relation of Barack and Michelle Obama, insisted his own fledgling political career would have their backing.

Barack was, apparently, a guest at his sister’s wedding to Ian Manners in the town, in 1996.

Ian Manners, a life-long Tory who lives in Bracknell constituency, plans to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by David Cameron to encourage candidates from a non-political background.

Mr Manners acted after his MP was forced to announce he will stand down following a public outcry last week when his constituents in Bracknell, Berkshire, called him “a thieving toad”.

RBFRS recognises unsung heroes this Volunteers’ Week

May 26, 2009

Fire engine

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is commemorating Volunteers’ Week next week (1-7 June) by recognising the people who generously give their skills and time free of charge to help the organisation.

One of the most established volunteer links RBFRS has is with the British Red Cross’ Fire and Emergency Support Service (FESS).  FESS provides practical and emotional support to those affected by domestic fires and other emergency incidents.  The service is delivered by specially trained Red Cross volunteers who operate on a 24/7 call-out rota basis.

When called out, volunteers travel to the scene of the incident in a fully equipped vehicle, based at Wokingham Road fire station, which can offer warmth, shelter, spare clothing, hot drinks and much more – from babies’ nappies to a fish tank!  FESS can also help those affected to contact friends and family, as well as insurance companies, credit card companies, landlords and other relevant agencies.

Barry Ratchford, RBFRS employee and FESS volunteer, said: “Being a FESS volunteer can be demanding and at times emotionally challenging but the rewards are enormous – you know you have made a real difference to someone when they need it the most.  We are always looking for more volunteers to help develop and deliver the service.  Full training is provided, you just need to be over 18 with a full current driving licence and your own transport.  Background and age isn’t important but you should also be in good general health, possess plenty of common sense and have a good sense of humour!”

Lloyd Palmer, Group Manager Response, said: “The contribution FESS volunteers make to those affected by fire and other emergencies is invaluable, providing a vital service that helps people get back on their feet after an emergency.  They are also a great help to our firefighters at incidents, as they address public welfare issues which allows the crews to concentrate on the firefighting operation.”

To find out more about volunteering for FESS, please contact Debra Kirkpatrick, Berkshire FESS Co-ordinator, at dkirkpatrick@redcross.org.uk

RBFRS also works with volunteers from all different backgrounds across other areas of the Brigade.  These include:

  • A British Sign Language (BSL) volunteer, who can communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing during Home Fire Safety Checks
  • Two volunteers who assist Young Firefighter instructors at Whitley Wood Young Firefighters Unit
  • A Polish fire safety advocate who works within the Polish community in Reading
  • Volunteers who help us to deliver fire safety messages during community talks

Matt Taylor, Community Development Officer, said: “We hope to expand our volunteers programme in the near future to include working with Duke of Edinburgh students to undertake ‘arson audits’ of their local area, identifying problems such as fly tipping to reduce the risk of deliberate fires.  We are also looking for more people to be fire safety advocates within their local communities, helping us to communicate important information and advice.

“Volunteering can be just as beneficial for the volunteer as for the organisation, whether it’s adding new skills to your CV, meeting new people or simply making a positive contribution to your community.”

If you would like to find out more about volunteering opportunities at RBFRS, please contact Matt Taylor on 0118 932 2768 or email taylorm@rbfrs.co.uk
